Stone in the Flesh

Mornings at La Ménagère. This is our routine. We sit in the courtyard that overlooks Via de’ Ginori. I pour brown sugar crystals onto the pillowy dome of my cappuccino, watching them sink and bleed their sweetness into my breakfast. Sometimes we share a croissant, but usually save our money and appetite for lunch when we will gorge on fresh pasta in poorly lit ancient spaces.

La Ménagère is picturesque and perfectly situated, en route to the heart of the city, Piazza del Duomo, where we will start our expedition: looking up in awe at Brunelleschi and Verrochio, shadowboxing with gargantuan sculptures, eventually branching off the veins of the square to explore the nooks and crannies of age-stained corridors. It is magical here.
